Beyond Baroque: A Tribute to Ntozake Shange
When poet, playwright and activist Ntozake Shange’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf” hit Broadway in 1976, this seminal play changed the lexicon of womanhood not only for women of color but for America. “For Colored Girls” became a banner for her generation and all those that followed. Shange’s novels and poetry wove a legacy of honest, searing and meticulous critique of society’s treatment of women, yet also how women needed to stop squandering their power. Shange died Oct. 27, 2018, but the spirit of her work will be evoked this night. Please join us for reading in tribute to Shange by Tchikonsase Aje, Nikia Chaney, Ruth Forman, V. Kali, Lynne Thompson, Pam Ward, and Jaha Zainabu. A Q & A will follow. Hosted by Shonda Buchanan.
Supported in part by a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles.
