Townhouse & The Del Monte Speakeasy Celebrate Repeal Day!
Townhouse and The Del Monte Speakeasy Celebrate Repeal Day -- the lifting of Prohibition on December 5th, 1933.
Did you know...?
During Prohibition, liquor was illegal but Caesar Menotti kept his cellar, beneath The Townhouse well stocked with booze. The Canadian whiskey ships would sail south stocked with whiskey and park 3 miles off the Venice shore. They would the deliver the illegal booze on smaller boats, underneath The Abbot Kinney pier and then men would bring it the rest of the way, through the tunnels that ran beneath the street straight into the speakeasy. Caesar put a 'grocery store' named Menotti's in place of the bar after it was 'closed' in 1920. The grocery store served as a 'distraction' to the rollicking speakeasy below. During prohibition he supplied the local hotel, tavern owners and politicians. After Prohibition was Repealed on Dec 5th, 1933, the grocery store was closed and the speakeasy became the entertainment portion of The Townhouse, as it is today.

After the Venice sign lighting ceremony, come celebrate with us in Venice's own original Speakeasy. Pig roast, jazz and stories galore. When the bell rings, drinks roll back to prohibition prices!!
