That includes a large Garifuna community in Southern California. \n\n\n\nCelebrating its sixth annual edition in 2017\, GIIFF will kick off May 12th and run through May 27th in Venice\, California. \n\n\n\nThis year's theme is "Remembering the Garifuna Holocaust" in memory of those freedom warriors who perished in the Garifuna Holocaust in the Americas 220 years ago. The sixth annual edition will present over 20 U.S. and international films\, including features and shorts. Opening the fest will be "Wayunagu" (Our Ancestors) by directors Angel Valerio and Christopher R. Miles on May 12th. There will also be a symposium titled "Immigration and Its Emotional and Social Impact." \n\n\n\nGarifuna is a unique culture descended from the only black Africans who fought and succeeded against being enslaved in the American Continent\, and who also mixed with Carib and Arawak people of the Caribbean. They speak their own language\, Garifuna\, as well as Spanish\, Belizean Kriol and English.
